SG70 Handling Information

for Structural Ceramic Sheet

Safety & handling instructions for machinable ceramics

1) This sheet provides additional guidance for use and does not replace the relevant Heath & Safety Data sheet (MSDS SG-7).

2) For general machining refer to "Machining guidelines for SG-70 structural sheet products". We recommend that all users of these materials review the safety data sheet MSDS SG-7.

3) Workers sensitive to potentially irritant ceramic or organic fibres and fine ceramic dust are not recommended for machining or handling these materials. See "Machining guidelines for SG-70 structural sheet products" instructions. A disposable dust mask, gloves, hat and suit are recommended even for people inert to such reaction.

4) During any light and simple machining operation such as drilling or cutting a shop vacuum cleaner is the minimum requirement for dust control. This should be set to suck from the point of origin of the dust. for major operations a properly installed dust collector system is recommended. See"Machining guidelines for SG-70 structural sheet products".

5) Dusting can be minimised after machining by wiping with a wet cloth or paper. Small amounts of water have no deleterious effect on these sheets. A specially prepared alumina hardener is available which will give a more positive seal to the machined surfaces.

6) Heavy hammering or bending may cause de-lamination, dust or fibre emission and is not recommended.

7) Where severe twisting or jolting is necessary to fit a piece in its location it may be beneficial to wrap the part in a sheet of plastics material and then cut the plastics sheet away when the part has been fitted.

8) The part should then be wiped down with water. Local vacuum cleaning is always recommended.

As an alternative the part may be coated with a hard epoxy, silicone or ceramic coating.
