SG70 Machining Guidelines

for Structural Ceramic Sheet

Description

Safety

Precautions should be taken to protect workers from the potentially irritant fibres and fine dust that result from machining SG-70 materials. In addition to standard safety measures a disposable dust mask (with at least HEPA type dust filter), protective gloves, hat and suit are recommended.

An adequate dust collection system is advised and this should be arranged to collect dust at source.

General machining techniques

All grades of SG-70 are machinable with conventional tooling. For extensive use carbide, carbide grit or diamond tools are recommended.

Use sharp tips and always machine through the entire thickness. Machine perpendicular to the plane of the board and use grinding methods whenever possible to minimise de-lamination.
When close tolerance and finish of the part is required grinding is preferred to cutting.

SG-70 is suitable for counter-boring, step machining or multi-diameter turning etc. and other intricate machining operations.

OperationTools usedRecommended speed*Recommended cutter / special instructions
Saw CuttingBand saw300 - 500 SFPMCarbide grit, diamond coated blades

Drilling,**Drill pressSet RPM similar to aluminium for metal bits.For holes < 3mm, use solid carbide for light production;
diamond coated drills and mills
for high production.
Counter boringMilling machine
MillingRouter3400SFPM for diamond coated tools
TurningLatheSet RPM similar to aluminium for metal bits. For turning use C-6 Carbide inserts, diamond inserts for high production.
Boring**Lathe3400 SFPM for dry diamond coated tools. Use C-6 Carbide inserts, diamond inserts for high production.
GrindingTool-post grinder Use any grinding stone, carbide grit or diamond coated tools.***

* Do not exceed tool manufacturer's maximum RPM recommendation. Feed rates are governed by the nature of the job and type of equipment used.

** Use backup material(scrap boards or wood) when drilling or boring all the way through the material.
If possible when boring pass ¾ of thickness, turn over and finish from other side to mimimze delamination.

*** Diamond-coat (40-50D) shaped cutters, drills (only 12mm coat necessary), wheels, mills, router bits etc. on HS Steel stock.
