Site inspection

Site inspections may take the form of planning and supervision of shut-down work or the investigation of a service failure.

Shut-down

In shut-down work it is desirable to have made previous visits or contacts to establish the scope of the proposed job and to ensure that drawings, operational details, labour, tools and repair materials are to hand.

When the shut-down commences the details of the work required should be established as quickly as possible and the action plan drawn up which will maximise the use of materiel while minimising the time spent off-line.

During the course of this work it is oftem possible to determine areas which are satisfactory at this time but which will need maintenace at the next opportunity.

The progress of the actual work is recorded as it happens and daily reports are made available to site personnel for their information and guidance.

Failure investigation

Where an unexpected refractories failure has occurred which results in unplanned down-time it is essential to get back on line as soon as possible either with the problem solved or with a course of action to resolve the problem at the first convenient opportunity.

To achieve this aim it is necessary to establish what appeared to happen, how it was observed and what steps were taken between the event and the time the investigation began.

In order to establish the cause of a problem it usually necessary to investigate the operating parameters up to the event and then compare these with the operating instructions. It is then useful to have access to the drawings describing the plant before the event. In many cases the original manufacturer's instructions for the use of the equipment with any subsequent approved or actual modifications are required.

When all the facts have been established a series of logical steps often leads to the correct interpretation of what happened. It is then possible to consider what constructional or operational changes may be necessary to prevent a recurrence of the same problem.
